RUNE DENSTAD LANGLO
Norway, 2009, 78 minutes, Color, film's website

Depressed that the love of his life is now with his former best friend, Jomar (Anders Baasmo Christiansen) spends his days watching disaster documentaries on the National Geographic Channel and half-heartedly running a shabby ski park. When he accidentally (perhaps) burns down the lodge he was living in, he decides to head north, across the frozen countryside, to his ex-wife and son. The journey begins via snowmobile through a silent, forbidding landscape that is as much a character as the few people Jomar encounters on his quest; the beautifully stark arctic emptiness mirrors Jomar's outlook. When the snowmobile breaks down, Jomar switches to skis, and through snow blindness and wrong turns encounters other hardy, quirky souls attempting to find meaning in the harsh environment. Jomar's advice to a young man lost at home while his parents are away seems apt: "Things are a bit difficult sometimes. That's the way it always is." —Dave Nuttycombe
