Festival Facts
- Now in its twenty-fourth year, The Washington, DC International Film Festival brings the finest in contemporary world cinema to the nation's capital. The festival has introduced over 1000 feature and short films from over 55 countries to an ever-growing audience.
- Filmfest DC is an 11-day annual festival presenting more than 100 feature premieres, restored classics and special events to the general public. All Filmfest DC presentations are Washington, DC premieres. Next year's festival will run from April 15 - 25, 2010.
- Each year we have grown in prestige and international recognition. Our films and talent are highlighted prominently in the national media, with features in Variety, The New York Times, The Washington Post and on Entertainment Tonight and CNN. ABC's affiliate WJLA-TV is our Official TV Station and NPR' s WAMU 88.5 FM is our Official Radio Station.
- Audience attendance totaled over 25,000 in 2009.
- An audience survey conducted recently illustrated that the majority of our audience are 18 to 49 year old individuals who tend to be educated, well-read, exposed to current events, well-traveled, higher income professionals.
- Filmfest DC hosts over 35 guest film directors and stars each year. Guests have included Cicely Tyson, Morgan Freeman, Signourey Weaver, Kelly McGillis, Edward James Olmos, Genevieve Bujold, Shirley Horne, Alan Rudolph, Lina Wertmuller, Donald Bogle, Robert Young, Alan Taylor, Maria Grazia Cuccinota, Eliseo Subiela, Peter Bogdanovich, John Malkovich, Sydney Pollack, Gabriel Byrne and Charlize Theron.
- Festival programming consists of a high profile opening night gala with champagne reception, dancing and premiere for 1400 guests with the film's director and cast in attendance; a closing night party for 1000 guests; cine cafes; panels; workshops, and Q&A sessions in the theatre itself. Film programming consists of fiction, docs, animation, family & kids programs.
- The festival is a District-wide event which brings together the city's major cultural institutions in a spirit of cooperation and celebration, including The World Bank, National Geographic Society, National Gallery of Art, DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, American Film Institute and Loews Cineplex Theatres.
